We held our first Fun Day of the season on Sunday 20th July, with nearly 40 club members attending at some stage during the day.
Festivities started with the traditional "Spider", won by Carol Earl, and we then had two nine end games of triples. Teams and rinks were drawn rather than selected, so different individuals get to try being skip, which leads to some interesting scores and results. The main aim is for everyone to have some fun, nothing serious, and new members get the chance to meet more club members. Individual scores are totted up to see who is the "Top Shot", and this time the prize winner was David Hayes on a score +18, closely followed by Val Meredith and Les Grundon on +16 and Anne Facer on +15. As top shot Dave not only won £25 but also got to choose a nominated charity, which on this occasion was Alzheimer's Research UK, a very worthy cause, receiving a donation of £25.
After a bring your own lunch, the afternoon festivities concentrated on four fun activities - Corner to Corner, Bowls in Buckets, Bullseye and Jacks in the Ditch. Each eventually led to a prize winner. Malcolm Thomas finally overcame his brother Richard, and also Dave Hayes to become our Corner to Corner Champion. Jan Hegarty proved too hot for everyone else, and the only one to score 100 in Bowls in the Bucket. Adrian Godley had little opposition for Jacks in the Ditch - as one of our newer members, he was the only person who managed to do it! Fred Cable managed to see off Les Grundon to win the Bullseye challenge. All winners won a prize of £25.
Even after paying all of our prize winners, and donating to charity we managed to boost club funds by £170, so a big thankyou to everyone who came, the organizers, those who helped set things up and put away, the ladies who made cakes, and the bar team who made sure that refreshments were available throughout the day. As promised the weather stayed fair and a fun day was had by one and all.
