Centenary Game against the Chelsea Pensioners

On Wednesday 9th August, we held our final Anniversary Event of our Centenary Year, with our invited guests being the Chelsea Pensioners. As the saying goes, this was definitely a case of leaving the best until last.

Arriving by coach, and dressed in full uniform, a contingent from the Chelsea Pensioners marched in to our Club House led by a piper. What a sight that was, as was their uniforms and medals lined up in the changing rooms. Despite their age in some cases, they are certainly not a shy and retiring group, and were keen at all times to engage with our members, and talk about their organisation and their own personal experiences. From the qualifying criteria to join, the size of their accommodation, the on site amenities, and the events they get invited to, the range of interesting topics was never ending.

In between, there was a game of bowls. A full seven rinks were used on the day and the weather was extremely kind. Some of our members were honorary Chelsea Pensioners on the day, to help keep the numbers even. The result was of no consequence, as the purpose of the day was to have a lot of fun, and for everyone to enjoy themselves, which they did in abundance.

After our celebratory dinner, speeches and raffle, our guests departed- again in full uniform and piped out to their awaiting coach. Luckily for us they left an invitation for us to visit them next year, for a guided tour and a game of bowls. That will be eagerly awaited without doubt.
